The January Call We Take Every Year

You get the findings in writing, you can weigh a repair against replacement with time to think, and you can arrange financing before anything is urgent.   • Heat exchanger inspection. This is the safety item. A cracked heat exchanger can let combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, into the air the blower is pushing through the house.   • Burners and flame sensor. Burners are cleaned and checked for even ignition and a stable blue flame. The flame sensor is cleaned of the carbon film that builds up over a heating season; a fouled sensor is one of the most common reasons a furnace lights, runs for a few seconds, and shuts back off.
  • Ignitor. Hot-surface ignitors wear with every cycle. A weak one tests weak in the fall and fails in the cold. Catching it here is a scheduled swap instead of a no-heat call.
  • Gas pressure and combustion analysis. We verify manifold gas pressure against the manufacturer's rating plate and run a combustion analysis on the flue gases. This is the check that confirms the furnace is burning cleanly and efficiently, not just running.
  • Inducer and blower motors. Amp draw, bearing noise, and wheel condition on both motors. The inducer has to prove draft before the burners will light, and a failing one is a very common winter breakdown.
  • Safety switches and condensate. Pressure switch and hoses, rollout and limit switches, and on high-efficiency furnaces the condensate trap and drain line. A blocked condensate line trips a safety switch and shuts the furnace down, usually on the coldest night.
  • Thermostat and controls. Calibration, wiring, and cycle behavior, so the furnace runs the cycles it was designed for instead of short-cycling.
  • Filter and airflow. A basic filter change is included on Cavinder Shield visits. A clogged filter overheats the exchanger, trips the high-limit switch, and shortens the life of the blower.

What We Find Most Often in Michiana Homes

  • Older homes hide older equipment.
